Professor Qianjin Lu

Professor Qianjin Lu is currently a Professor and Director of Institute of Dermatology at the Central South University, Director of Hunan Key Laboratory of Medical Epigenomics. Professor Lu conducts research in epigenetic and autoimmunity for over 10 years and especially he is much interested in DNA methylation in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus. He was the first to demonstrate that defects in DNA methylation are responsible for the aberrant overexpression of important immune genes like ITGAL, PRF1, TNFSF7 and CD40LG in human CD4+ lupus T cells, converting normal“helper” cells into autoreactive, cytotoxic, pro-inflammatory cells that contribute to and likely cause lupus flares. Professor Lu has extended these studies to IL10 and IL13 in lupus T cells, providing new
insights into mechanisms promoting Th2 differentiation in these patients. Even better, He has identified three novel mechanisms contributing to T cell DNA demethylation in patients with lupus. His reports that RFX1 downregulation, GADD45a and miRNA-126 overexpression contributes to T cell DNA demethylation in lupus patients are important and highly original reports.
